  • Reilly Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery

It is rare to find a classical mausoleum with explicitly Christian symbols—except in Catholic cemeteries, where it is very much the norm. This fine little Doric temple bears a cross on the top, broadcasting the unambiguous message, “Tasteful but not pagan.”

  • Fall Leaves in Calvary Cemetery

A particularly splendid maple tree in Calvary Cemetery.

  • Weber Angel, Homewood Cemetery

A flower-strewing angel steps forward from a rustic boulder. The first Weber was buried in this plot in 1887, and that may be about the date of this monument.

  • Sterrett Monuments, Chartiers Cemetery

Robert and Rachel Sterrett have two monuments—a tall shaft and an elaborate double headstone in marble. Perhaps the plot was intended for the Sterretts and all their descendants, who would gradually grow a flourishing crop of elaborate marble headstones; but it did not happen that way.
