  • Armstrong Monument, South Side Cemetery

    Armstrong monument

A moderately Art Deco interpretation of Gothic. In his brief visit, Father Pitt was not able to find any dated Armstrong headstones nearby, but the style would probably date this monument to the 1920s or 1930s.

  • Daniel Negley Monument, Allegheny Cemetery

    Daniel Negley monument

A romantic marble monument to one of the powerful Negley family.

    BORN
    APRIL 10th 1802
    DIED
    DEC. 4th 1867

In a different light the eroded inscription on the open book might be more legible, but many of the letters have disappeared.

  • Dupey Mausoleum, Allegheny Cemetery

    Dupey mausoleum

A small and simple rustic Romanesque mausoleum that still bears its decades of accumulated industrial blackness.

  • Evelyn M. Simpson Monument, Allegheny Cemetery

    Evelyn M. Simpson monument

    JULY 26, 1836—MARCH 23, 1891
    IN LASTING MEMORY OF THE
    NOBLE INFLUENCE AND
    COUNTLESS LOVING DEEDS OF
    EVELYN M. SIMPSON
    TEACHER IN
    PITTSBURGH HIGH SCHOOL
    1871—1891

    ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
    PITTSBURGH CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

A monument from her students to a beloved teacher who died young. In the late 1800s, going to high school was a privilege, even in public schools, since most working-class teenagers would probably have been helping support their families. Thus a high-school teacher might have a more appreciative audience, and the experience for the students might have been more like college and less like medium-security prison.

  • B. F. Jones Monument, Allegheny Cemetery

    B. F. Jones monument

We have seen this monument to steel baron B. F. Jones before, but the splashes of sun and shade, and the November colors, seemed picturesque enough to warrant seeing it again.
