Clarke, according to the cemetery site, was a riverboat and railroad operator. The monument was erected in 1886.

Moorhead Column, Allegheny Cemetery
Erected in 1877, this column is unusual in carrying two distinguished works of sculpture in different media. The bronze relief is by Carl Conrads (who actually signed it); the cemetery site does not attribute the stone statue, and old Pa Pitt’s eye for sculptural style is not good enough to say whether it is or is not Conrads’ work.

Mourner on the Braun Mausoleum, South Side Cemetery
The South Side Cemetery in Carrick does not have monuments by famous architects like the ones in the Allegheny Cemetery, but some of its residents did have good taste in sculpture.

Stained Glass in the Wittmer Mausoleum, Allegheny Cemetery
A fine piece of glass, though the symbolism may be a bit muddled. The parting of the clouds and the heavenly radiance suggest that the dove represents the Holy Spirit; the leaf in its beak suggests Noah’s dove (Genesis 8:10-11).
