A restful bench and a beautiful high relief make this monument an inviting spot for a few minutes of contemplation.

John Daub Monument, Homewood Cemetery
Father Pitt does not know the sculptor of this exceptionally fine angel, probably Gabriel waiting for the Conductor’s signal to come in with his trumpet solo. But thanks to a site in Rhode Island, he does know that the memorial was built from blue Westerly granite; that it was ordered in March of 1902, several months before Mr. Daub died; and that the cost was $8000, which was a fair bit of money.

Wallace Monument, Allegheny Cemetery
Daniel Wallace and Daniel Wallace are buried here. The monument carries a Star of David; the statue (by an unknown sculptor) carries a cross and Bible. We suspect that the Star of David, or Seal of Solomon, is a Masonic rather than Jewish symbol here.

A. J. Sunstein Mausoleum, West View Cemetery
Another Egyptian mausoleum that hits all the expected marks, except that it is too small (or cheap) for lotus columns. This one, however, adds the delightful detail of pharaoh’s-head door pulls, which more than makes up for the missing columns.
Little smiley characters like the one at upper left occasionally appear on mausoleum doors in Pittsburgh cemeteries. It’s a cheerful little mystery.
A thorough history of the Sunsteins and Speyers is in the Jewish Encyclopedia of Western Pennsylvania.
